Government’s anti-democratic move to restructure regional governance

MPP Blais attendes the public hearings for Bill 100, the so-called Better Regional Governance Act, to fight the Ford government’s anti-democratic changes to regional governance structures across Ontario.

Last week was constituency week, a week dedicated for MPPs to spend connecting with constituents in their riding. Instead of allowing MPPs to do this, the government scheduled public hearings for Bill 100 last Tuesday. While the Minister and all witnesses are allowed to participate virtually, MPPs are required to attend in person.

Bill 100 is problematic in many ways, but the most egregious part of it is that, if passed, the Minister will have the power to appoint and remove the heads of all Ontario Regional Councils and give them strong powers to subvert the will of the majority of council members. This is fundamentally anti-democratic.

As the Ontario Liberal Critic for Municipal Affairs, MPP Stephen Blais appreciated the opportunity to listen and connect with all those who made the time to testify at committee.

If you have any thoughts on Bill 100, he would love to hear from you. Sblais.mpp.co@liberal.ola.org
