Government kills Stephen’s anti-harassment bill inspired by the Chiarelli situation in Ottawa

  • Legislative Review

Last month the Government changed their position and decided to kill Stephen’s Private Member’s Bill, Stopping Harassment and Abuse by Local Leaders Act, 2022.

The Bill, inspired by the events in Ottawa, had previously been unanimously supported last spring.

Serious incidents, similar to Ottawa, have been reported in Brampton, Barrie, Mississauga and several other communities.

Stephen’s Bill had received support from over 150 municipalities and Ontario’s Big City Mayors. The principles of the Bill were also endorsed by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and the Rural Ontario Municipal Association.

The only people or groups against the bill were the perpetrators and now our provincial Government.
