Blais presents $1,000 to help offset cost

Cumberland City Councillor Stephen Blais was proud to present a cheque for $1,000 to the Cairine Wilson Varsity Girls Soccer Team.

“The commitment of these young ladies to school, soccer and volunteerism is truly remarkable,” said Councillor Blais. “I am very proud of them and pleased to help offset costs associated with this once in a lifetime opportunity.”

The 16 players from the Cairine Wilson Varsity Girls Soccer Team will be traveling to England this March Break as part of a school exchange with Worthing College. The team members aged 14-18 are accomplished players who last season were provincial quarter finalists.

“What a remarkable gesture by Councillor Blais to help our soccer team”, said Stuart Barbour, the team’s coach. “Without even being asked, Councillor Blais volunteered to help make this a reality for our players.”

These young ladies also play club competitive soccer on various teams, while balancing a demanding athletic schedule with education and volunteer commitments. The Wildcats also give back on an annual basis by hosting a Charity Tournament for “Right To Play”. To date, they have raised over $12,000 for children’s sports programs in Third World Countries.

“Investing in local amateur athletes is an essential component to help ensure Orléans is well represented at sporting events of all types,” added Councillor Blais. “As a community conscientious elected official, I want to do my part to help groups with private rather than public donations.”

The funding was raised by private donors through the annual Stephen Blais Golf Classic and donated on behalf of Action Orléans – a not-for-profit club that has been helping sports and other groups throughout Ottawa.
