Despite the Government defeating Stephen’s Private Members Bill last spring, it continues to garner support from cities and towns across Ontario. The Stopping Harassment and Abuse by Local Leaders Act would have created a process to remove Mayors and Councillors from City Council for extreme cases of sexual harassment, abuse and physical harm. The Government defeated the bill this past spring.
Nonetheless Stephen, and a group of committed women and men, have been travelling the province to continue to garner support. Since its defeat, yet another 100 cities and towns have signed on, bringing the total number of municipalities who want this change to over 200!
At the recent Rural Ontario Municipal Conference, the Minister of Municipal Affairs confirmed that he has heard the calls for change and is working on his own legislation to bring forward.
As you know we had a very serious situation here in the City of Ottawa and Stephen will continue to press the Government until it is addressed.
