Cumberland Councillor Stephen Blais and the City of Ottawa have reached an agreement with Mattamy Homes to build two parks in their Orléans Summerside Development years ahead of schedule.

In addition to the front ending agreement, Mattamy is also contributing an additional $355,279 above and beyond what would otherwise be spent on building the parks.

“This is exciting news for our community,” says Blais. “With this common sense approach to park construction we will be able to ensure our future neighbours can enjoy these parks as they move into their new homes, not years later, as has been the case for many other developments.”

The two parks have a total value of $904,304 with the City contributing $549,023 from development charges and Mattamy generously contributing $355,279.

“We are excited to be in Orléans and for the opportunity to build these parks years ahead of schedule for our new homeowners to use and enjoy,” says Susan Murphy, Land Development Vice President of Mattamy Homes.

The phase 1 park will include playgrounds with swings and a play structure, a shade structure, pathways, planting and informal grassed play areas. The design for the phase 2 park is not yet complete but may include: a playground with swings and a play structure, a mini-soccer field, pathways and planting.

“Parks are a top priority for me,” adds Blais. “In the last year we’ve seen $6 million in new parks in Cumberland Ward including three which are being built years ahead of schedule as the result of innovative agreements with home builders.”

Phase 1 park will be complete this year with a likely completion of the Phase 2 park in 2013. The Summerside Community is Mattamy’s first in Orléans with plans for 385 new homes in phases 1 & 2 of the development.

The agreements are subject to approval by the City of Ottawa’s Planning Committee and City Council.
