Councillor Blais Renews Support for Cobras

Donation to help pay for uniforms

Cumberland City Councillor Stephen Blais has donated $500 to help the U15 Girls Cumberland Cobras offset costs of uniforms during a profound opportunity to compete in the The Ontario Youth Soccer League (OYSL).

“I’m a big fan of the Cumberland Cobras as their tireless efforts is a golden asset to our community, our parents and our athletes,” says Councillor Blais. “For this reason and so many others, I am pleased to once again help complement this effort with financial support.”

The OYSL is the highest level of competition a soccer club, such as Cumberland United, can compete in at the youth level. Most of the teams are from the Toronto area and this league provides exposure for the players to possibly compete at an even higher level.

“The money Councillor Blais is contributing to us this year will help purchase new uniforms,” says Mark Grey, Manager of the U15 Girls Cumberland Cobras. “Councillor Blais’ continued support of us is very much appreciated.”

The team of girls have made Cumberland proud by achieving first place in the Eastern Region Soccer League in 2013 and looking forward to the new challenges that they will face this summer in the OYSL. As the majority of the teams of the OYSL are from the Toronto area, the team will have to travel there for approximately five weekends, which requires a big financial commitment on the parent's part.

“Investing in amateur sports is an essential component to help ensure all of us enjoys a thriving community,” added Councillor Blais. “As a community conscientious elected official, I want to do my part to help groups with private rather than public donations.”
