Two grant proposals from Navan get approval to help celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary

Cumberland City Councillor Stephen Blais is proud to announce the awarding of two grants to celebrate Canada150 in rural Cumberland.

“The 2017 Civic Events Funding Program is a great way to ensure that villages such as Navan are able to celebrate the Canada’s biggest anniversary in the same spectacular fashion that other Ottawans do on Parliament Hill,” says Blais. “It is great to see that rural areas are getting the support they deserve to organize an unforgettable Canada Day.”

Capital Xelles get huge boost

Cumberland City Councillor and amateur sports champion Stephen Blais is donating $2,000 to the Capital Xelles Basketball club, a competitive basketball team based in Orléans, to pay for operating costs such as new uniforms, basketballs, and gymnasium rentals.

“I am proud to contribute to programs like the Capital Xelles, which help athletes reach their full potential in academics and athletics,” says Councillor Stephen Blais. “Building strong fundamentals in the community and in school are key in creating tomorrow’s top athletes.”

Centre Street in Vars is renamed after two important and early pioneer families

Councillor Stephen Blais along with Jean Seguin and members of the Allard and Suprenant families officially commemorated the renaming of Centre Street in Vars to cours Suprenant Walk and cours Lionel-Allard Walk.

As part of the Improve Process for Resolving Municipal Addressing Anomalies, Centre Street was identified as requiring a name change. Centre Street was divided into two parts, north and south of the Via railway line.

Support for Orléans’ sports programs extends to rurals’ best

Cumberland Ward City Councillor and amateur sports’ champion Stephen Blais was pleased to donate to Carter Sullivan, a high school senior student and one of Ottawa’s finest equestrians. Councillor Blais’ support will help offset costs for Carter to compete in the Ontario Silver Dressage Championships and the Canadian Interprovincial Championships this summer.

Prescott-Russell Trail rest area in named after Harold H.

Councillor Stephen Blais is pleased to have City Council support the Cumberland Township Historical Society’s efforts to name a Prescott - Russell Trail rest stop after OPP Constable Harold H. Dent.

Constable Dent was murdered by a foreign national while on official duty June 20,1940 at the Navan Train Station after he confronted a reportedly suspicious stranger. World War II had been underway for ten months at the time and all citizens were required to carry a national identity card.

Donation will help students perform at Disney

Cumberland City Councillor Stephen Blais has donated $2,000 to the St. Peter’s High School Show Choir “Treble Threat” that will help 29 students travel to Orlando, Florida to sing as part of the Candlelight Processional at Disney World.
